Monstrous Tears

Type

Drawing

Year

2023

Material

Watercolor on paper

Monstrous Tears is a continuation of the Monstrous Love series, shifting the focus inward — from external familial control to the internalized emotional response of the self. This work reflects my complex relationship with crying, shaped by a childhood in which tears were met with judgment, shame, and repression.

In this piece, tears are not a sign of weakness, but a valid, embodied expression of emotion. The work seeks to reclaim crying as a natural, non-verbal language of the self — one that does not require justification or explanation. Rather than portraying tears as symbols of fragility, Monstrous Tears presents them as vessels of memory, time, and transformation.

Each drop holds a trace of past and present selves, connecting moments of emotional overflow that words could never fully capture. These tears emerge not only from pain, but from the intensity of feeling itself — raw, ambiguous, and real.
